3 Things You Might Have Missed at Scaling New Heights 2017

Published

Inside the conference room, snow swirled, wind howled, and the distant sounds of a very real, very intimidating yeti could be heard above the din.

Outside the conference room, skies were blue, children played, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse frolicked in the sunshine.

Yes, this year’s Scaling New Heights theme, “Face the Yeti,” stood out in stark contrast against the sunny and warm setting of Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida.

But for good reason.

You see, Scaling New Heights is intended to encourage accountants and bookkeepers around the globe to “reach new heights” in their practices — to make the epic climb by bravely exploring new technologies, learning from the very best and brightest in the business, and courageously accepting (and overcoming!) the many challenges small business clients present.

In other words: to face the yeti and come out victorious.

And if you missed this year’s epic yeti encounter, there are a few things you’re going to want to catch up on.

1. The Keynote Speech That Left the Crowd in Tears

Yetis come in all shapes and sizes. And last September, TSheets CEO Matt Rissell faced his biggest and baddest yeti to date: testicular cancer. Fortunately, after a seriously tough battle, Matt was able to defeat that particular yeti and continue climbing the great climb!

But he didn’t do it alone. His family was right there fighting alongside him. And when all was said and done, he realized that they were an absolutely pivotal part of his journey.

“Unfortunately, sometimes we have to go through a challenge to figure out the ‘why’ behind what we do,” he said. “And this challenge made my ‘why’ very, very clear — it’s my family.”

Matt went on to encourage the crowd to think about their “whys.”

“Why do you do what you do?” he asked. “What’s the motivation behind everything you do? Not just in your business, but on a personal level.”

At TSheets, it’s our mission to help business owners succeed by helping them save time and money. But our real “why” goes a little bit deeper than that.

In short, we do what we do so that YOU can better manage your time. So that you can turn those minutes you might have spent working or running payroll into moments you can spend with your friends and family. We do what we do so that YOU can turn minutes into moments.

“You might see TSheets and think we’re just soft T-shirts or sweet parties,” Matt said, “but what you don’t always see is the team of people behind TSheets who work hard, day in and day out, to make TSheets amazing. To turn your minutes into moments.”

2. A Power Breakfast That Inspired the Masses

For Misty Megia, Head of Accounting at TSheets (and total female powerhouse), every breakfast is a “power breakfast” — but this one was especially inspiring.

That’s because Misty shared four foolproof ways to grow your practice and make the most of absolutely every minute! Want to know what they are?

  1. Who
  2. What
  3. Why
  4. How

Confused? Don’t be. It’s simple.

If you want to grow your practice, it all starts with WHO you hire (Misty recommends hiring for personality first). From there, figure out WHAT you want to focus on (Misty recommends finding your niche and giving it your full attention!). After that, figure out your WHY ( … sound familiar?). When it comes to determining your “why,” Misty recommends keeping your customers in mind. Finally, learn HOW — in this case, how to take these steps and put them into action!

“Leverage cloud technology that’s intended to make your life easier,” said Misty. And focus on turning those hard earned extra minutes into unforgettable moments.

3. Exciting and Informative Breakout Sessions

Specifically, a firm of the future themed session by TSheets’ very own Kelly Bistriceanu and Dan Buckingham.

What’s a firm of the future?

Simple. It’s a firm that embraces cloud technology and automation (firms of the future know that automation can actually be beneficial for business — rather than a detriment). It’s a firm that seeks to innovate and streamline paper processes in an effort to save time and take on more clients. And it’s a firm that’s built to outlast the competition.

Want to transform your firm into a firm of the future?

Start by looking for best-of-breed app integrations (like TSheets + QuickBooks, TSheets + Expensify, and TSheets + … well, you get the picture) that will help you streamline your processes, offer more accounting services, and, in turn, take on more clients!

Then join accountant-specific partner programs (like the TSheets PROs) to gain the resources you need to slingshot your firm into a very successful future.
