The word “healthy” can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. The common thread? We all know that being healthy is important. Which is why “healthy” is second in TSheets’ lineup of core values in THE PBR.
And out of all the definitions I’ve heard of the word “healthy,” I like TSheets’ definition best:
You start with a company built on technology customers love. A foundation for a business to blossom, grow, and delight customers around the globe. What do you need next? A healthy, happy team to sustain and grow that dream.
“Isn’t it ironic,” you might ask, “that a beer can represents your value of ‘healthy’?
We think it’s perfect.
It’s All About Balance
When I tell my friends there’s beer in the TSheets’ break room fridge, they look at me like this:
“All the time?” They ask.
“Yep,” I say.
And then they do this:
Yes, there’s beer in the break room. But nobody worries much about policing it. Why? Because of that “Healthy” value. There’s a time to drink beer on the patio, and there’s a time to buckle down and get things done (aka most of the time!).
It’s a great litmus test for hiring new employees. Is this someone who knows how to balance hard work with a well-deserved cold one on occasion? Is this a person who is motivated to take responsibility for their own productivity and wellness?
That Punctuation Matters
Notice there’s not an “and” connecting the two phrases in this core value. It’s “Work really hard. Play really hard.” Full stop on both sentences.
That’s because there’s two separate concepts at work (and at play) here.
And that’s what it takes to do justice to both.
Most of the time, you’ll find us buckled down, typing furiously, reaching out to customers who have questions, and doing what it takes to get new features to market that we know will make our customers’ lives better and easier. When we work, we work hard.
Then, after a big week, an exciting new product launch, or a hard-won milestone, we close our laptops, set the code aside, and play hard. We don our silliest, best costumes and hit the golf course together. We play a game of ping-pong. We throw an epic party with 1,000 of our closest friends.
Work and Play Our Own Way
Part of our commitment to health is breaking the mold when it comes to work and play. We make our own path when it comes to helping our customers and developing our product. You won’t hear our customer service reps say “Sorry, we can’t do that, it’s against our policy.” Or fumbling through a call with what you later find to be incorrect information. And you won’t find our developers creating throwaway code. At TSheets, working hard means working well. Not just getting the job done, but getting the job done right.
And when it comes to play? We play our own way. You won’t find stifled, corporate fun here. You’ll find beat drops, dancing, laughter…
…and dogs dressed up in T-shirts.
